"Laughing " pictures two young Turkana children from the Nototo Mountains in northern Kenya. When I arrived in a village for the first time, I usually began by addressing the Chief and the elders. I always asked permission to stay and work in their village. After some discussion, and a review of me and my work, I was generally accepted as their guest and given a hut to live in. In the afternoon I would bring out the mirror so the children and adults could have a good laugh looking at their unusual reflections. This mirror was a wonderful way to get to know another culture and its people, inspiring openness of heart and fostering dialogue with laughter. These two children are looking into the wonderfully curved mirror or the first time ever, and laughing at what they see. |
