The Turkana people, like many of the Africans, tell stories during dinner around the fire in the evening, until they go to bed. This was the time that inspired me to see. Pictures would tumble into my head as a result of what I heard or events I had seen during my stay. I would later ask the person modeling for me to re-create the stories told the previous evening by making a series of gestures relating to the feeling in the story.
Ai-Yo-Pan, pictured in the center, enjoyed being photographed. "Dance of Life" symbolizes the opening of the heart and extension of the soul to embrace the events in life that face us all: birth, death, celebration, despair. The children's appearance in this photograph was serendipitous, since they happened to wander into the image out of curiosity. I have found that Africa has its own order, and remarkable things happen when one can flow with it.
